NRECA Women in STEM: Katragadda Sowmya

Katragadda Sowmya, Senior Applications Developer Advisor, IT, NRECA

Job Role: Senior Applications Developer Advisor

Department: IT

Explain a little bit about your career at NRECA. What is the core function of your current role and how does it support the mission of the organization?

I work on a team at NRECA that provides a full suite of technology services at all points of the software development life cycle such as strategy, business analysis, project management, custom development, software implementation, database administration, application extension and user support. We provide these services during the development of all NRECA applications, with a focus on providing the most impactful solutions for the business.

How did you become interested in your area of expertise?

My brother was a successful professional in the IT industry. He was the one who encouraged me to explore opportunities in this industry. But it was the combination of my own explorations, along with the guidance my instructors provided while in school, that confirmed software was the right path for me.

What is your favorite thing about your job and NRECA?

My favorite thing about NRECA is its flexibility. I am able to wear different hats at different phases of each project, unlike other organizations where different people handle different areas.

What inspires you?

Witnessing others working hard inspires me to do the same.

Also, feeling appreciated for the work I do, whether the work is done successfully, or even when the business chooses not to implement the completed job. Feeling appreciated is particularly good in the latter case!

What does it mean to you to be working in your current field?

It’s a challenging, competitive, continuous learning environment.

If you had a piece of advice for someone who wanted to explore a role in Tech or another STEM field, what would it be?

  • Develop strong study skills.
  • Explore your options.
  • Find your cheering section.
  • Seek out mentors.
  • Take the initiative.
  • Accept responsibility.
  • Remember! Failures are opportunities to learn.
