EPA Must Repeal Biden-Era Power Plant Rule Expeditiously to Reduce Crippling Uncertainty, Protect Reliability

ARLINGTON, Va. – National Rural Electric Cooperative Association CEO Jim Matheson today issued the following statement after providing written comments on the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposal to repeal the Biden-era power plant rule.

“Repealing the unlawful power plant rule is an essential step to ensure the reliability of the electric grid and meet skyrocketing energy demands,” Matheson said. “Always-available generation is critical to keeping the lights on at a cost local families and businesses can afford. And until the Biden rule is repealed, it remains in effect and is a source of severe uncertainty for electric cooperatives. We appreciate the Trump administration’s recognition of these challenges and urge it to move swiftly to finalize this proposed repeal.”

The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association is the national trade association representing nearly 900 local electric cooperatives. From growing suburbs to remote farming communities, electric co-ops serve as engines of economic development for 42 million Americans across 56 percent of the nation’s landscape. As local businesses built by the consumers they serve, electric cooperatives have meaningful ties to rural America and invest $15 billion annually in their communities.
