SOTU: Electric Co-ops Pledge Continued Partnership with Policymakers to Prioritize Affordable, Reliable Power

ARLINGTON, Va. – National Rural Electric Cooperative Association CEO Jim Matheson today issued the following statement on President Trump’s State of the Union address.

“The United States is facing a growing reliability crisis as the nation’s energy supply struggles to keep pace with skyrocketing electricity demand,” Matheson said. “Electric cooperatives are meeting the moment and making investments to bolster grid reliability and keep the lights on at a cost local families and businesses can afford. At the same time, co-ops are working with technology companies and local stakeholders to reliably power communities today and build towards a better tomorrow. Now more than ever, we need pro-energy policies that prioritize affordable, reliable power.”

The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association is the national trade association representing nearly 900 local electric cooperatives. From growing suburbs to remote farming communities, electric co-ops serve as engines of economic development for 42 million Americans across 56 percent of the nation’s landscape. As local businesses built by the consumers they serve, electric cooperatives have meaningful ties to rural America and invest $15 billion annually in their communities.
